Have you ever used the dough hooks that come with an electric mixer?

I'm interested in making homemade bread. I have an electric mixer with what they call dough hooks. Can I use them to do the kneading?

Have you ever used the dough hooks that come with an electric mixer?
yes yes yes...I use mine all the time....the kneading time though is not like when the recipe calls for kneading (like 10 minutes or what ever) but when the dough starts clinging to and riding up the dough hook...the dough is done kneading.....mine turns out perfect every time and I use it often.....good luck
Reply:Yes, mine works very well. Just watch for it to be smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky.
Reply:Yes. I have a Kitchen Aide stand mixer that does a fantastic job. The hook turns and makes a wonderful bread.

I also have a cheaper brand with 2 dough hooks, and the hooks do not turn, nor does the bowl when filled with dough. It works ok, but I have to stand there and turn the bowl for much longer that it would take for hand kneading and the dough never is smooth or elastic. That cheap brand is fine for mixing, but not beating or kneading. I find my hand mixer better for beating egg whites and just about everything else. I should dump that cheap stand mixer. It's more trouble that it's worth and doesn't do a good job.

Spend a few more dollars and get a Kitchen Aide mixer. It's priceless.
Reply:I use mine when I make certain types of breads. Like kaiser buns where you need to beat egg white into flour. You can only use them for so long and then the dough gets so dense you have to finish by hand (unless you've got an amazing little motor in your mixer...most hand mixers don't).

I find the use of dough hooks more handy when making chocolate chip cookie dough. It's still moist so the mixer can handle the load.
